Industrial chiller

Industrial chiller

300–2000 kW chillers for plastics, food and chemical processes and data centres; screw compressors, ±0.5 °C water temperature accuracy.

Highlights

  • 300–2,000 kW cooling capacity
  • Semi-hermetic screw compressor, variable frequency drive (VFD) on request
  • Air-cooled or tower-connected water-cooled condenser
  • Leaving water held to ±0.5 °C in the process version
  • −10 °C with glycol as standard, down to −30 °C with the low-temperature version
  • Free-cooling coil for compressor-free cooling in winter
  • N+1 redundancy with master/slave operation
  • R134a, R513A and R1234ze refrigerant options, including low-GWP alternatives
  • SCADA or BMS connection; data logging, alarm management

Applications

  • Plastic injection moulding and extrusion
  • Mould cooling
  • Food and beverage production
  • Pharmaceuticals and chemicals
  • Automotive and metalworking
  • Textiles and dyehouses
  • Data centres and server rooms

An industrial chiller cools the production process, not the building: moulds, extruders, reactors, fermentation tanks or server rooms. Unlike comfort cooling, it runs every day of the year, 24 hours a day in most plants, and keeps the leaving water within a narrow band; in the process version this band is ±0.5 °C.

Compressor and condenser

Units above 300 kW use semi-hermetic screw compressors: they are efficient at part load as well, are long-lived and, with a variable frequency drive (VFD), follow the load steplessly. Large multi-scroll units can also be chosen in this class. A water-cooled condenser (connected to a cooling tower) or an air-cooled condenser is chosen according to the water supply and the space available at the plant.

Glycol and free cooling

In a glycol circuit, −10 °C leaving water is standard; a special low-temperature version goes down to −30 °C. When the outdoor air is cold enough, the free-cooling coil cools the water with outdoor air and the compressor stops. In processes that run continuously, this compressor-free period considerably reduces annual energy consumption.

Redundant operation

In plants where production must not stop, several units run in a master/slave arrangement to provide N+1 redundancy; when one of the units stops for maintenance or because of a fault, the others carry the load. A connection to SCADA or the building automation system provides data logging and alarm management.

The unit is selected for the process load and the required water temperature, and quoted. The table below gives the typical range for this class; the technical documents of the selected model are shared at the quotation stage.
